Translate into English

 

1. Dāsiyā mātā dhenuṃ rajjuyā bandhitvā ānesi.

The slave woman’s mother tied and brought the cow with a rope.

 

2. Mayhaṃ mātulānī yāguṃ pacitvā dhītarānaṃ dadissati.

My aunt, having cooked rice gruel, will give (it) to the daughters.

 

3. Kaṇeruyo aṭaviyaṃ āhiṇḍitvā tattha kāsūsu patiṃsu.

The she-elephants wandered in the forest and fell in the pits there.

 

4. Dhanavatiyā sassu idha āgamma bhikkhū vandissati.

The rich woman’s mother-in-law will come here and pay homage to the bhikkhus.

(Having come here, the rich woman’s mother-in-law will pay homage to the bhikkhus.)

 

5. Rājiniyā dhītaro ārāmaṃ gantvā satthāraṃ mālāhi pūjesuṃ.

The queen’s daughters went to the garden and honored the teacher with garlands.

 

6. Kaññānaṃ pitaro dhītarānaṃ vuddhiṃ icchanti.

The girls’ fathers wish the daughters prosperity.

7. Kuto tvaṃ dhenuyo kiṇissasi?

Where did your sisters eat after having bathed and cooked?

 

9. Te gehassa ca rukkhassa ca antarā kīḷiṃsu.

They played between the house and the tree.

 

10. Nāriyā duhitaro gehassa anto mañcesu sayissanti.

The woman’s daughters will sleep on the beds inside the house.

 

11. Dhītuyā jaṅghāyaṃ daddu atthi.

There is eczema on the daughter’s calf.

 

12. Yuvati mālā pilandhitvā sassuyā gehaṃ gamissati.

Having put on garlands, the maiden will go to the house of her mother-in-law.

pilandhati: to adorn, put on, bedeck

 

13. Amhākaṃ mātarānaṃ gāviyo sabbattha caritvā bhuñjitvā sāyaṃ ekattha sannipatanti.

Having roamed and eaten everywhere, the cows of our mothers assemble at one place in the evening.

sannipatati: to assemble, come together

 

14. Dhanavatiyā nattāro magge tiriyaṃ dhāvitvā aṭaviṃ pavisitvā nilīyiṃsu.

The rich woman’s grandsons ran across the road, entered the forest, and hid themselves.

(Having run across the road and entered the forest, the rich woman’s grandsons hid themselves.)

15. Asani rukkhassa upari patitvā sākhā chinditvā taruṃ māresi.

The thunderbolt fell over the tree, cut off the branches, and destroyed the tree.

 

 

Translate into Pali

 

1. The girl's mother gave a garland to the damsel.

Kaññāya mātā kumāriyā mālaṃ dadi.

 

2. Having tied the cows with ropes the woman dragged (them) to the forest.

Vanitā dhenuyo rajjūbhi bandhitvā aṭaviṃ ākaḍḍhi.

 

3. Having wandered everywhere in the island, the damsel's sister came home and ate (some) food.

Kumāriyā bhaginī sabbattha dīpamhi caritvā /āhiṇḍitvā gehaṃ āgamma āhāraṃ bhuñji.

 

4. Where does your mother's sister live?

Kattha /Kuhiṃ tava mātuyā bhaginī vasati?

 

5. My sister's daughters live in one place.

Mama bhaginiyā dhītaro /duhitaro ekattha vasanti.

 

6. When will they come to the river?

Kadā te nadiṃ āgamissanti?

 

7. The queen's mother-in-law came here yesterday and went back today.

Rājiniyā sassu hīyo idha āgamma ajja paṭinivatti /paccāgami.

Paṭinivattati: [paṭi+nivattati] to turn back again, return    aor. paṭinivatti

paccāgacchati: [paṭi+āgacchati] to fall back on, return again, come back

 

8. Having bathed in the tank, the daughters of the rich woman walked across the garden.

Dhanavatiyā dhītaro vāpiyaṃ nahātvā ārāme tiriyaṃ cariṃsu.

 

9. Our aunts will cook rice-gruel and drink it with women friends.

Amhākaṃ mātulāniyo yāguṃ pacitvā sakhībhi saha pivissanti.

 

10. The cows of the mother-in-law walk between the rock and the trees.

Sassuyā dhenuyo pāsāṇassa ca rukkhānaṃ /tarūnaṃ ca antarā caranti.

 

11. When will your mothers and daughters go to the garden and hear the words of the Buddha?

Kadā tumhākaṃ mātaro ca duhitaro ca ārāmaṃ gantvā Buddhassa vācāyo suṇissanti?

 

12. From where did you bring the elephant?

Kuto tvaṃ hatthiṃ ānesi /ānayo?

 

13. Sons of the queen went along the river to a forest and there fell in a pit.

Rājiniyā puttā nadiṃ anu aṭaviṃ gantvā tattha kāsuyaṃ patiṃsu.

 

14. There is itch on the hand of the sister.

Bhaginyā hatthe kacchu atthi.

 

15. The thunder-bolt fell on a rock and broke it into two.
