Translate into English

 

1. Sabbesaṃ nattāro paññavanto na bhavanti.

Grandsons of all are not wise.

(i.e. Some are wise; others are not.)

 

2. Sabbā itthiyo vāpiyaṃ nahātvā padumāni pilandhitvā āgacchiṃsu.

Having bathed in the tank and put on lotuses, all the women came.

pilandhati: to wear, don, put on; adorn, bedeck

 

3. Añño vāṇijo sabbaṃ dhanaṃ yācakānaṃ datvā gehaṃ pahāya pabbaji.

Another merchant gave all his wealth to beggars, left home, and became a monk.

pajahati: to give up, renounce, forsake, abandon, let go, get rid of   ger. pahāya

pabbajati: to go forth, leave the household life, become a monk, take up the ascetic life (as bhikkhu, samaṇa, tapassin, isi, etc.)

 

4. Mātā ubhayāsaṃ pi dhītarānaṃ vatthāni kiṇitvā dadissati.

The mother will buy and give the clothes to both of her daughters.

 

5. Ko nadiyā vāpiyā ca antarā dhenuṃ harati?

Who carries the cow between the river and the tank?

 

6. Kassa putto dakkhiṇaṃ disaṃ gantvā vīhiṃ āharissati?   

Whose son will go in the southern direction and bring the paddy?

dakkhiṇa: (adj) southern, usually in combination with disā (direction)

 

7. Ye pāpāni karonti te niraye nibbattitvā dukkhaṃ labhissanti.

Those who do evil deeds will be reborn in hell and get suffering.

nibbattati: to be reborn, exist, be produced; come out from, arise, become, result, come into being

niraya: (m) hell, purgatory, a place of punishment and torture

 

8. Kāsaṃ dhītaro vanamhā dārūni āharitvā odanaṃ pacissanti?

Whose daughters will bring firewood from the forest and cook rice?

 

9. Katarena maggena so puriso nagaraṃ gantvā bhaṇḍāni kiṇi?

By which road did the man go to the city and buy goods?

bhaṇḍa: (n) stock in trade; collectively goods, wares, property, possessions

 

10. Itarā dārikā vanitāya hatthā pupphāni gahetvā cetiyaṃ pūjesi.

The other girl took the flowers from the woman’s hand and offered (them) to the shrine.

 

11. Paresaṃ dhanaṃ dhaññaṃ vā gaṇhituṃ mā cintetha.

Do not think to take wealth or grain of others.

dhañña: (n) grain, corn

 

12. Aparo aññissaṃ vāpiyaṃ nahātvā pubbāya disāya nagaraṃ pāvisi.

The other person, having bathed in another tank, entered the city in the eastern direction.

aññissaṃ: (f. loc. sg.) another

pavisati: to go in, enter [+ acc.]   aor. (sg.) pāvisi; (pl.) pāvisuṃ, pāvisiṃsu

 

 

Translate into Pali

 

1. All entered the city (in order) to see gardens, houses and streets.

Sabbe ārāmāni ca gehāni ca visikhāyo ca passituṃ nagaraṃ pāvisuṃ.

 

2. The daughters of all the women in the village walked along the path to the shrine.

Gāmamhi sabbāsaṃ itthīnaṃ duhitaro maggena cetiyaṃ acariṃsu.

 

3. Another maiden took a lotus and gave (it) to the former.

Aññā yuvati padumaṃ ādāya pubbassā dadi.

“The former” refers to the former maiden.

 

4. Which man will bring some milk for me?

Kataro /Katamo naro me khīraṃ āharissati?

 

5. Who stands on the bank of the river and looks in the southern direction?

Ko nadiyā kūle ṭhatvā dakkhiṇaṃ disaṃ oloketi?

 

6. Sons of all rich men do not always become wealthy.

Sabbesaṃ dhanavantānaṃ puttā sadā dhanavanto na bhavanti.

 

7. Whose grandsons brought the cows here and gave (them) grass to eat?

Kesaṃ nattāro idha dhenuyo ānetvā tiṇaṃ bhuñjituṃ dadiṃsu?

 

8. Tomorrow, all women in the city will come out from there and wander in the forest.

Suve nagare sabbā vanitāyo tato nikkhamma araññe āhiṇḍissanti /vicarissanti.

vicarati (= āhiṇḍati): to wander, go or move about in  [+ loc.]

 

9. The other woman, having seen a leopard on the street, ran across the garden.

Itarā vanitā visikhāyaṃ dīpiṃ disvā ārāme tiriyaṃ dhāvi.

 

10. Whosoever acquires merit through charity will be born in heaven.

Yo koci dānena puññaṃ labhati so sagge nibbattissati.

 

11. A certain man brought lotuses from the pond, another man carried (them) to the market to sell.

Aññataro naro pokkharaṇiyā padumāni āhari, añño naro vikkiṇituṃ āpaṇaṃ hari.

 

12. My brother's son broke the branches of the other tree (in order) to gather flowers, leaves and fruits.

Mama bhātuno putto pupphāni ca paṇṇāni ca phalāni ca ocinituṃ itarassa rukkhassa sākhāyo bhañji.
